12 days in the Salzburg region (Salzkamergut), Austria, with two kids (1 and 4 years old) at the beginning of September.
Austria is a beautiful mountainous country, suitable for any kind of tourism. Salzkammergut Lake Region, with its temperate climate, is not like the one in the highlands. It is very suitable for traveling with kids – you can stay in one place and drive not very long distances every day.
All the routes are suitable for children in a stroller, if not written otherwise.

Day 1:
We arrived at Vienna Airport , collected the car we rented on the internet and had a long four- hour drive to our farm Lochgrubgut near the village of Altenmarkt in the Salzkammergut region.
Just as we always do, we sent an email to the owners, verifying price and the apartment type. Emmy, the hostess of the farm, is very pleasant. She speaks English. There is a horse and pony riding near the farm, and they give a discount to the farm residents.
Here is their website in different languages: www.altenmarkt-urlaub.at/
Day 2:
The route to the Liechtenstein Klamm gorge passes through wooden bridges over the river.
A trained eagle show in the Hohenwerfen castle from the 11-th century.
Day 3:
Walking with a stroller around two lakes of Gosausee. The larger lake is a fabulous place, and the smaller one is a wild one. We spent the whole day in this wonderful place and had a picnic by the lake.
Day 4:
Eagle’s Nest – Das Kehlsteinhaus was closed for technical reasons, but people say the view from there is spectacular.
We went to the Konigssee Lake in Germany for the whole day. The excursion boat was going to the church of St.Bartholoma. Then the boat came to the last station. A short walking path led us to a small and very beautiful Obersee lake.
Day 5:
The climb in the cable car to the “5 fingers” observation deck in Krippenstein from Obertraun town on the Dachshtein mountains and a hiking route with spectacular views of several lakes. On the way of the cable car there is a stop with the children’s park, where you can spend an hour or more. If you are interested in extreme sports, you can paraglide in tandem with an instructor. It looked very tempting.
Hallstadt – the town near the lake is the pearl of Austria.
If you have time, I would recommend you to visit a salt cave on the mountain of Hallstadt.
Day 6:
Today we did not go anywhere. In the morning we did a hiking route, which started in the woods near our house.
The children are riding ponies within few minutes from our house. You can also enjoy horse riding.
In the evening, we lit a bonfire in the meadow near the house and had a picnic with baked potatoes and corn.
Day 7:
Today we decided to take a bike ride to the lake of Flachau and back. There is an “Intersport” sportswear shop on the main street of our village of Altenmarkt, where you can rent any bike. We took two bikes and a trailer for the children, and we were also given a road map.
Day 8:
High Alpine Road Grossglockner hochalpenstrasse. It was a journey that lasted the whole day -with many stops on the way to enjoy the most beautiful mountain views, valleys and glaciers,as well as entertainment for children. The entrance to the road costs 30 euros, but it’s worth it.
Day 9:
Lammer Gorge
Waterfalls – Golling Wasserfall
Toboggan slide Durrnberg is the longest in Europe (2.5 km (
Day 10:
Fabulous lakeside towns St.Wolfgang and St.Gilgen. If you have time, we advise you to make a trip by a steam train to the Schafberg Mountain. It started to rain, and we had to miss the trip.
Day 11:
The climb to the mountain of Zauchensee ski resort by a cable car and a hiking path around the lake. It was just 5 minutes by car from our house.
Day 12:
The same day, before flying back home we came to Salzburg. You can leave your car on a parking lot near the river across the bridge from the Mirabelle Gardens. Of course, you can stay in Salzburg another day and walk to the places from the movie “The Sounds of Music”. Salzburg is a very beautiful town.
We returned our car at Vienna airport.
